Wing Commander Secret Ops: Luyten System
Episode Five: ‘Viral Legacy’
Luyten System
Luyten 03.A8 – Welcoming Party
Cerberus: I think we’ll have some problems reaching Luyten station anytime soon.
Launching fighters!
Zero: Intel reports that the aliens are not moving from Proxima – they’re massing. I’d been expecting them to attack Sol any day… but they’re just sitting there.
Maestro: What’s so special about Proxima?
Spyder: It’s got two suns.
Maestro: I don’t think so.
Zero: He’s right. It’s got two suns.
Maestro: No, I believe that part. I just don’t think that’s the reason. They have to be staging a strike on Sol. There can’t be any other explanation.
Cerberus: Nice work, Alpha One. You’re clear to land.
Luyten 04.00 – Defensive Tactics
ICIS: The concentration of alien craft in this system remains unknown. Your wing will lead a patrol along this route. Eliminate any alien vessels you contact. When your patrol is completed, return to Cerberus.
Cerberus: Nice work, Alpha One. You’re clear to land.
Luyten 04.K7 – Luyten Station Support
ICIS: An alien cruiser is closing on Luyten outpost at this moment. Clear all NAV points surrounding this station and preserve the main outpost complex. Cerberus stands to gain important data from the sensor array aboard Luyten as well as necessary supplies and possible reinforcements.
Cerberus: Nice work, Alpha One. You’re clear to land.
Luyten 05.UX – Banded Enigma
ICIS: Cerberus jump detection software has located a possible alien supply convoy in this system. Follow this NAV route and eliminate any alien interceptors you encounter. When you reach the alien supply convoy, destroy it and all attending craft. Once the convoy has been eliminated, you will be cleared for landing.
Cerberus: Nice work, Alpha One. You’re clear to land.
Luyten 05.V4 – Luyten Strike
ICIS: We are now able to strike the alien cruiser, due to our successful defence of the Luyten outpost. This is the first of three alien capital ships believed to be in this system. After the failed alien attack on Luyten station, cruiser defences should be relatively light. Fighters and bombers from Luyten station will add additional fire-power to this effort and to our continued movement through the system.
Spyder: Strike force to Cerberus: Our target is a no show. Requesting new orders.
Cerberus: Stand by. Strike Leader, Luyten reports contact with the cruiser on her long range scanners, closing fast. Re-route to NAV 2 and intercept the cruiser before she can engage the station.
Cerberus: Nice work, Alpha One. You’re clear to land.
Luyten 06.XZ – Cruiser Remains
ICIS: Our failure to preserve Luyten station has left us without the resources necessary to assault the alien blockade in this system. Confederate forces in Sirius have sent reinforcements to this new position. Patrol these points, rendezvous with the incoming ships and escort them safely to Cerberus.
Cerberus: Nice work, Alpha One. You’re clear to land.
ICIS: With continued help from forces in Luyten, we will attempt to remove the alien blockade presence. Follow this NAV route and eliminate all alien craft. Once your mission is complete, Cerberus will advance to Krieger system for further elimination of the alien blockade. (Luyten 06.Z3)
With help from forces in Sirius, we will attempt to remove the alien blockade presence. Follow this NAV route and eliminate all alien craft. Once your mission is complete, Cerberus will fall back to Sirius to aid Confed forces before a second blockade can be created. (Luyten 08.A4)
Spyder: There’s more news about the alien debris being sold on the black market.
Maestro: I can’t wait to hear more about those little crusty slime-bags…
Spyder: An acute rash begins on the hands and arms of anyone who touches the alien starship debris. The rash worsens over time and results in a necrotic effect on the skin. It collapses the flesh beneath the rash in a matter of hours.
Zero: I hate it when I’m right. That’s the same effect we witnessed on the survivors of the Alberghetti wreckage. What are they doing for the victims?
Spyder: There’s almost nothing they can do at this point. You see, it’s not exactly a skin reaction. It’s a ravenous organism that feeds on dermis and muscle tissue. Treatment is taking the form of an injection battery: hundreds of hypodermic needles across the entirety of the infection. And it all has to be done simultaneously.
Maestro: Why?
Spyder: It moves. Medics have had to develop a mechanism that sinks all of the injecting needles at the same moment… kind of like an Iron Maiden. Keeps the infection from avoiding treatment by shifting through the skin. Very smart disease.
Cerberus: Nice work, Alpha One. You’re clear to land.
