Special Operations 2: Canewdon System – Part 2

Canewdon A

Maverick: Paladin, it’s good to see you again!
Paladin: Likewise, lad. I wish I had brought ye better news. I’ve been intercepting and decrypting Kilrathi transmissions. From what I’ve heard it sounds like someone has already informed the Kilrathi about the Morningstar project.
Maverick: Did you get any information from the Human found on the Kilrathi freighter we captured?
Paladin: He says they were delivering supplies to a secret Mandarin base called Ayer’s Rock.
Maverick: I’ve never heard of any place called Ayer’s Rock before. I thought that the Special Operations Group knew the locations of all Mandarin hiding places.
Paladin: Oh, I’ve heard of this one before, to be sure. I just don’t know where it is or anything else about it, is all. But I intend to find out before much longer.
Maverick: If I can be of any help, you know where to find me.

Briefing Room
Angel: The Confederation has taken considerable losses in the Deneb sector in the past months. It is up to the Concordia to make a stand here to enable the Sixth Battle Fleet to regroup, and eventually re-establish a presence in this sector. The Kilrathi are certainly tracking us. We bloodied them the last time they tried to force us out. No doubt they will be out there again, waiting for us. I want you to remember why you are serving aboard Concordia before you fly your patrol today. You are here because you are the best.
Maverick listens as Angel gives out the assignments.
Angel: Maverick, you’re leading Maniac, Crossbones, and Talon on a Morningstar test patrol. Patrol your Nav points. Watch out for a minefield between Nav 1 and 2. That is all, ladies and gentlemen. Dismissed.

Angel: What do you have to report?
Maverick: Nav 1 was deserted. At Nav 2, there were four Strakha fighters. None of them survived. At Nav 3 there was a single Gothri who tried to take us all on by himself. He didn’t have a chance against me, of course.
Angel: What did you find at Nav 4?
Maverick: There were four Jalkehi fighters waiting for us. They weren’t much of a problem.
Angel: I’ll take this information to Tactical immediately. Dismissed, Maverick.

Maniac: This is a friendly little game of cards, Maverick. Just like the old days. I thought this’d be a good way for you to get to know the rest of the Wild Eagles a little better. This guy on my left is Captain Jeffrey “Talon” Burkheimer. He has an unusual hobby.
Talon: I speak Kilrathi. Or at least I do as fluently as any Human can. I also study Kilrathi battle tactics and history.
Maverick: Hardly what I’d call a relaxing pastime.
Maniac: Now I’d like you to meet Captain Markham “Crossbones” Colt. This guy is an ace and he flies exactly the way I do.
Maverick: Isn’t that just a bit dangerous, Crossbones?
Crossbones: Hey, you know how it is. If it’s time to get your ticket punched, you can’t do anything about it. It’s no big deal.
Maniac: You and Captain Grimaldi already know each other, of course.
Minx: Not as well as I’d like to.
Maverick: Ahem, yes. Well, who’s turn is it to deal again?
Maniac: I believe it’s yours.
The Bridge, TCS Concordia.
Tolwyn: Your report, Colonel Devereaux?
Angel: Admiral, our scanners detect a wave of Kilrathi fighters approaching from the asteroid field!
Tolwyn: Scramble fighters!

Tolwyn: Red Alert! Attack craft approaching!
Concordia: Colonel Blair and Captain Wright! Report to the flight deck immediately.

Maverick: Stingray, do you read?
Stingray: Of course, sir. Ready to attack on your command.
Maverick: These cats thought they’d launch a surprise attack on the Concordia… Let’s give them a little surprise of our own, Stingray.

Sparks: Report to the Bridge immediately, sir!
The Bridge, TCS Concordia.
Tolwyn: Colonel Blair, Captain Wright, let’s hear your report…
Maverick: There were six Gothris and one Kamekh. I nailed 4 of them. Stingray took down 3.
Tolwyn: Your fast action has saved the Concordia, officers. The Confederation has lost a lot of ships in this area. And the Kilrathi can now focus on us as their primary target. We must be ready to repel other attacks at any time. I will mention your fine work in my next report to the High Command. Dismissed.

Talon: I’ve got a question for you, Maverick. When are you going to retire?
Crossbones: As a Colonel, you should be able to secure a decent command that will keep you off the flight deck.
Talon: What are you trying to prove, still flying the front lines after ten years?
Maverick: In case you haven’t noticed, Captain, there’s a war on! The Confederation needs every good pilot we have!
Crossbones: We didn’t mean any disrespect, sir. It’s just that we’ve heard about what happened with Jazz. If Maniac had gone after Jazz, he’d have scratched him then and there. How many more pilots will die because Jazz is free again? He’s even threatened to get revenge against you. How does that make you feel knowing he may come gunning for you one day?
Maverick: It makes me feel just fine, Captain. I’m looking forward to it.
Concordia: Colonel Blair, report to the flight deck immediately.
Sabre Launch
Concordia: Maverick, the Concordia is currently passing through a dense concentration of mines and asteroid fields. The earlier Kilrathi sneak attack was no doubt the first phase of a consolidated effort to drive us out of this area. We have detected low level transmissions from what may be a data pod at Nav 3. You are to investigate these transmissions.
Wasp: It’s good to be flying with you, Maverick.
Maverick: Let’s hope you still think so after we chase down the source of those transmissions.
Fly Canewdon C
Concordia: Maverick, we’ve just decoded the transmissions from Nav 3. It’s a warning beacon from a timed explosive device! Get out of there immediately!
Sparks: Welcome back, sir!
Colonel Devereaux’s Office.
Angel: I am glad to see you made it back safely, Christopher. What do you have to report?
Maverick: I got out of Nav 3 before the bomb went off. That warning came just in time. A few more seconds and I would have been vaporised! Aside from that I ran into 3 Drakhri at Nav 1. I encountered three Jalkehi fighters at Nav 2. At Nav 3, there were four Sartha hiding in the asteroids. I only managed to take down 5 of the enemy on this mission.
Angel: You look like you can use a little rest, mon cher. You’ve earned it. Dismissed.

Maverick: What’s wrong, Crossbones? Everyone’s been acting like they’re at a funeral.
Crossbones: The Mandarins have been making propaganda broadcasts. We received one while you were on patrol. They showed the hijacking of two Terran freighters. “Jazz” Colson was leading them. Damn you for letting him go, Maverick!
Maverick: I didn’t let him go. The Mandarins rescued him.
Ten minutes later…

Maverick: What did you want to talk about, Minx?
Minx: You looked lonely, Christopher. I thought you could use a sympathetic ear.
Maverick: “Jazz” Colson has been on me like a curse for the last ten years. I’d have sacrificed my career, sacrificed everything, even my life, to be rid of him.
Minx: You’re a highly skilled pilot, and an officer who follows orders. You’re too valuable to be sacrificed for so little.
Maverick: Minx… I don’t know what to say…
Minx: Then don’t say anything, Christopher.

Minx: Hey, handsome! You missed a killer patrol.
Maverick: Minx, what are you doing back from your patrol already? And where is your wingman?
Minx: Still at Nav 1. We encountered a massive enemy force. I was ordered to return immediately to the Concordia.
Maverick: This isn’t a simulator exercise, Captain! When you leave your wingman behind, you’re leaving him to die!
Minx: But Angel ordered me back to the Concordia so the Kilrathi wouldn’t capture the Morningstar!
Maverick: You mean… Angel was your wingman? Angel is still out there?
Minx: Yes, she said she’d hold off the Kilrathi and then head back here–
Maverick: Excuse me, I have work to do.

Maverick: Angel, are you all right?
Angel: Yes, mon ami. Thank you for helping me out of that bad situation.
Maverick: I still can’t believe Minx just left you out there.
Angel: Minx went back for help at my order. I didn’t want to lose the Morningstar prototype.
Maverick: Angel, you’re more important than a prototype fighter. Especially to me.
Angel: I’m sorry that we haven’t had much time for each other lately, Christopher. When I thought I might die without ever seeing you again…

Mandarin: Everything has gone according to schedule, so far.
Kilrathi: So far? You sound as if you anticipate a problem.
Mandarin: Only one. Maverick. He seems highly intuitive, and he possesses extraordinary combat skill. He may jeopardise my escape plans.
Kilrathi: Colonel Christopher “Maverick” Blair, the Hero of K’Tithrak Mang. Does he fly regular patrols now?
Mandarin: Yes. I am transmitting the time and co-ordinates of his next patrol to you now…

Briefing Room
Angel: I have new patrol assignments for everyone… These will be standard patrols, but today they will have added significance. We have received word that there will be a delay in the Sixth Battle Fleet’s return to the Deneb sector. We are to stand our ground in this sector until further notice. Until the Sixth Battle Fleet can regroup, we are all that stands between the Kilrathi and dozens of unprotected Terran settlements. Keeping a clear track of our enemy is vital. Maverick, you and Crossbones will patrol and clear your Nav points. Good luck. Dismissed.

Angel: How was your patrol, Maverick?
Maverick: Hard work. At Nav 1 there were two Jalkehi waiting in the asteroid field.
Angel: What did you find at Nav 2?
Maverick: Five Sartha and one Fralthra. The Fralthra is history.
Angel: Was there any enemy presence at Nav 3?
Maverick: A solo Gothri ace. He was not a problem.
Angel: This is very strange, Maverick… For days, there has been a minimal enemy presence in this area, but suddenly, they are attempting another major assault.
Maverick: It’s suspicious, all right.
