While other operating systems may be less susceptible to security attacks, the sad fact is that many software packages are only available for Microsoft Windows. For as long as Windows is a necessity and not just a choice of operating system, certain precautions should be made to make life for potential attackers as difficult as possible.
- Ad-aware: The original anti-spyware software.
- Spybot – Search & Destroy: Scans for various malicious software and can be used concurrently with Ad-aware.
- AVG Free: A series of anti-malware software packages available for free for non-commercial computer use. Unfortunately, it has become rather bloated in recent years.
- avast! Free Anti-Virus: Another popular free anti-virus software package.
- GRC: Even when one reads past the hype of Steve Gibson’s site on Internet security, it is still nonetheless an informative resource.
- ZoneAlarm: A hardware firewall is always recommended, but ZoneAlarm also provides reasonable firewall capabilities on a software level. Unfortunately, the latest releases have become somewhat bloated and adware-oriented.
